Major It Conference Features Poole Social Media Research

A study from professor Sherry L. Fowler spotlights the dangers of social media for minors, as well as possible policy solutions.

At the 2024 European Conference on Information Systems (ECIS), Poole College scholar Sherry L. Fowler presented her research on potential negative effects of social media on young people.

“There is increasing scientific support for the ‘addiction by design’ claim and mounds of anecdotal evidence to support it,” Fowler, a professor of practice in information systems and business analytics, writes in First Do No Harm: The Dangers of Social Media Systems for Minors. “There are also steps that society can take to address the risks.”

Fowler’s June 16 presentation in Cyprus was part of the ECIS Technology, Research, Education, and Opinion (TREO) Forum, which spotlighted emerging, innovative ideas.
