Research Interests
My research bridges the fields of analytics, economics, and public policy, with a focus on developing and applying statistical methods to solve real-world challenges. I specialize in text data analysis to predict economic outcomes and network modeling to assess systemic risks in financial systems. My work has been funded by the National Science Foundation and published in leading journals across Operations Management, Finance, and Statistics.
Recently, I’ve explored how minimum wage increases impact worker compensation and scheduling practices, as well as how machine learning techniques can enhance the analysis of online customer reviews.
Industry and Academic Contributions
Before joining NC State, I held faculty positions at Cornell University and the University of Maryland. My industry experience includes collaborations with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, the Federal Reserve Board, and leading retail and technology companies.
Student Engagement and Mentorship
I’m passionate about helping students navigate the full lifecycle of analytics projects—from data collection and cleaning to advanced modeling and generating actionable insights. My teaching approach emphasizes real-world applications, preparing students to make data-driven decisions in complex business environments.
At Poole College, I serve as the inaugural faculty lead for the Business Analytics concentration, shaping a curriculum that equips students with cutting-edge tools in AI, machine learning, and data visualization. At the graduate level, I teach courses on Business Data Analysis with SQL and Machine Learning Methods in Business, where I focus on hands-on applications to help graduate students solve real-world analytics problems.
Why Poole College?
I was drawn to Poole College because of its strong commitment to integrating academic research with industry practice. The collaborative culture and emphasis on analytics align perfectly with my research and teaching philosophy. As someone whose work cuts across multiple domains, I value the intellectual freedom and interdisciplinary opportunities Poole provides.
Outside the Classroom
When I’m not teaching or researching, I enjoy spending time with my wife and young daughter, exploring Raleigh’s parks and outdoor spaces. I’m also an avid reader, kickboxer, and science fiction fan.
